The purpose of the revitalization scheme for the City of Castlegar was to improve and beautify the original downtown core. This resulted in a set of design guidelines which establish sidewalk width, landscaping and provide the downtown merchants with a design theme for building construction and renovation.

The Building Design Guidelines were produced by Mainstreet Consulting Associates in 1992.
These guidelines address:

• The Elements of the Streetscape
• Building Facade Elements
• Building Signage
• Overhangs

The guidelines also follow through with the established theme,
respecting the City's slogan of: "clean, green, lively and colourful"

Developed by the Design Review Committee, the design guidelines are applied to the Development Permit Area
and were incorporated into the Official Community Plan.
