The Town of Gibsons is located
on the Sunshine Coast, on the eastern end of the Howe Sound peninsula.
Well known internationally for the popular television show, "The
Beachcombers", the Gibsons waterfront is the focal point
of the town.
The following information has
been provided by the Town of Gibsons. Passages in italics are

In the fall of 2000, the Town of Gibsons underook a new revitalization
plan with the participation of the planning students from the
Planning and Architecture at UBC. The report, Fresh
Eyes on Gibsons was prepared for the Town of Gibsons after
six weeks of community analysis. Downtown Revitalization.
The Gibsons Downtown Revitalization Plan proposes several
courses of action which include the creation a Waterfront Park,
which will be developed within the context of streetscape improvements.
These include the closing of School Road, bylaw changes to allow
for moderately higher density of mixed use in the downtown and
land assembly or cooperative development.

Town of Gibsons Downtown Revitalization Plan - 1995 was
prepared by Don Vaughn Ltd., Matrix Architecture, John
Klassen, Engineer, N.D. Lea and Associates
The Plan
The Plan for the Town of Gibsons includes several key aspects
to revitalize the downtown. These include:
- Facade Improvement Guidelines
- Implementation
- Proposed courses of action
- Costs
- A Course for the Future
The Goals:
a) Examines and makes recommendations with respect to
the entry sign at the north entrance to the Town.
b) Identifies required utility servicing infrastructure improvements.
c) Reviews traffic patterns and makes recommendations for improvements.
d) Reviews current parking requirements, identifies opportunities
to create new parking, and recommends future parking schemes.
e) Delineates a detailed program of streetscape improvements,
including facade improvement guidelines, signage, street furniture
and other aspects of street improvements.
f) Provides cost estimates in relation to the above, identifying
priorities and recommending phasing.
The Process:
The evolution of this plan has been guided by the Gibsons
Landing Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee. Every aspect
of the plan was presented to and reviewed by this committee.
Many of the recommendations have been selected from among options
presented to the committee. Information meetings have also been
held with the Gibsons Landing Merchants Association, a draft
version of the plan presented to City Council, and the final
plan presented to the public. The Project Team brought a range
of specialized professional skills to assess the potential of
Gibsons Landing. These include a landscape architect, architect/urban
designer, civil engineer and traffic consultant.
