Growth Resources
This resource collection was
compiled to support the presentation made by Tim Pringle, Executive
Director of the Real Estate Foundation, at the National Executive
Forum on Public Property conference, held in Vancouver on
May 9 and 10, 2003.
The theme of the conference was
"Sustainable Development Opportunities and Implications".
Mr. Pringle's presentation focused on how the concepts of sustainable
land use and smart growth can provide useful frameworks for addressing
communities' social, economic, and environmental well-being.
Community Energy Association - Case Studies
Detailed discussions of specific
initiatives, programs or issues related to community energy planning
in British Columbia, with points of interest for planners, engineers,
local officials and developers throughout.
Brookings Institution Center on Urban
and Metropolitan Policy
Growth in the Heartland: Challenges
and Opportunities for Missouri
is a research publication that examines metropolitan growth in
terms of population, economic, social, and land development trends.
Canadian
Institute of Planners
The Canadian Institute of Planners
(CIP) has been dedicated to the advancement of responsible planning
throughout Canada since 1919. It is the national professional
institute and certification body for the planning profession
in Canada.
Common
Good Planning Center
The website contains resources
on issues related to its name: planning for the common good.
Aging and smart growth is one of the issues addressed.
Congress
for the New Urbanism
New Urbanism is an urban design
movement that burst onto the scene in the late 1980s and early
1990s. New Urbanists aim to reform all aspects of real estate
development. Their work affects regional and local plans. They
are involved in new development, urban retrofits, and suburban
infill. In all cases, New Urbanist neighborhoods are walkable,
and contain a diverse range of housing and jobs.
Energy Foundation
The Energy Foundation is a partnership
of major U.S. foundations interested in sustainable energy. The
website includes special reports and links to a variety of organizations
promoting standards, practices, and codes in support of sustainable
energy use.
Federation of Ontario Naturalists
A Smart Future for Ontario:
How to Protect Nature and Curb Urban Sprawl in Your Community is a community guide that provides "information,
ideas, tools and strategies". While Ontario-specific, the
publication contains current information that could be of interest
to other jurisdictions.
Funders for Smart Growth
Resource and focal point for
foundations, nonprofit organizations and other partners working
to solve the environmental, social, and economic problems created
by suburban sprawl and urban disinvestment. The U.S.-based website
includes working papers, projects, and other resources.
Issaquah Highlands
This article in the King County
Journal (Washington State) is entitled, "Issaquah's
Highlands fling: So far, giant development has home buyers pleased,
Microsoft waiting in wings".
James Taylor Chair in Landscape and Liveable
Environments
Research and outreach organization
that demonstrates how to design and build affordable, equitable,
and ecologically healthy communities. The Chair works with citizens
and public officials to incorporate new and emerging policies
for sustainable development into community plans. The Headwaters
Project (Surrey, BC) and the Damascus
Area Community Design Workshop (Oregon) are two of many available
online resources.
National Conference of State Legislatures
- Growth Management & Land Use
The Environment, Energy and Transportation
Program's focus on land use legislation has been on growth management
and the relationship of land use to related environmental and
economic development policies. The State
Incentive-Based Growth Management Laws database is searchable
by state and topic (e.g. purchase of development rights, growth
management, rural land).
National Governors Association - Center
for Best Practices
"Governors have enormous
opportunities to improve statewide planning to enhance and shape
economic development, protect natural resources, and preserve
each community's quality of life." The online Center includes
examples of how U.S. states are tackling issues such as brownfield
development, transportation, and greenhouse gas emissions.
The
Neptis Foundation
Neptis is an independent, privately
funded organization that conducts nonpartisan research, education
and publication on urban regions. Neptis aims to gather reliable
information on regional urban growth, and to make it accessible
to wide audiences. It seeks to provide, through scholarship,
credible bases for public discussion and decisions on regional
urban issues, particularly where they have been absent or inadequate.
In so doing, Neptis contributes to more prudent, productive and
exhilarating urban development.
Ontario Smart Growth
Smart growth is the government's
vision for promoting and managing growth in Ontario. It is a
vision based on three principles: a strong economy, strong communities
and a clean, healthy environment. Information is available for
five geographic zones in the province.
Smart Growth America
Smart Growth America is a coalition
of 80+ organizations. The website contains many resources, including
policy solutions, tools for advocates, SGA initiatives, and research
and publications.
Smart
Growth Online
This is a service of the U.S.-based
Smart Growth Network. Resources include Placemaking: Tools
for Community Action, Getting to Smart Growth: 100 Policies
for Implementation, and Affordable
Housing and Smart Growth: Making the Connection.
Sustainable
Development Research Initiative
SDRI is an interdisciplinary
research initiative at the University of British Columbia. Research
is relevant to decision-makers and policy makers and based on
the involvement of non-academic partners in the research process.
Community outreach, research, and publications information is
available on the website.
The Town Paper
The Town Paper is a quarterly publication of news and
features about traditional neighborhood development (TND). The
website has links to discussion papers, and information about
TND's in North America and around the world.
Urban
Land Institute - Case Studies
The ULI website's "other
sites" item includes a separate SmartGrowth.net
site. Case study abstracts are available. The "research"
item includes these, and other (development) case studies. Policy
papers and special reports are also available under "information
services".
